Robin Matto is an abstract artist & music creator from the South of the UK. He is a graduate in Graphic Design (Visual Communication), his work has won various competitions and been featured in publications & exhibited in a number of gallery’s such as the Truman gallery on Brick Lane and New Designers 2006 at the Business Design Centre, Islington.
The paintings of RM have a strong sense of fluidity and immediate feel, similar in some respects to the street art/graffiti. The raw nature of his final presentation and choice of humble materials are a reaction towards the clinically presented work in high-street galleries and the cold nature of purely digital art.
RM mainly uses spraypaint and acrylic on his canvasses, plus any other tools/materials that come to hand; such as mud, car-sealer and glue. From experimenting with these unusual materials RM’s paintings have a distinctive texture, which have become his artistic signature.
The themes of RM’s work reflect his emotions towards a specific person, or event that has touched his life. Current affairs such as the fractious Global political climate are ever present and each piece is a representation of the trials and tribulations of life today through the eyes of the artist.
In terms of artists that have influenced his style of work, he cites historic & contemporary art movements such as Abstract, Impressionism, Surrealism, Graffiti, Social commentary, Protest art, Punk, Psychedelia.
Artists such as; Caspar David Friedrich, J.W M.Turner, Dali, Picasso, Hieronymus Bosch, Gauguin, Hokusai. William Morris, Emory Douglas, Blek le Rat, Banksy, MrJago, Zezao, Kiripi Katembo Siku, George Shaw, Jonathan Miller, David Shrigley.
One of the most prominent influences in the work of Robin Matto are textures found in urban environments; Concrete, flaking paint, rusting metal and the multiple layers of torn advertising posters all fuel his passion to create. RM remains moved by the fact that these built-up layers, are like glimpses of a City’s past, exposing memories from its former years.
Inextricably linked to the visual work of RM is his passion for music and the way that both can evoke a transcendental experience. RM intends to further explore the link between his visual & musical output by following in the footsteps of artists he admires such as Flying Lotus, Pursuit Grooves, Roger Robinson, Brian Eno, Grimes etc who create art in tandem with their sound.
At present Robin Matto is exploring different mediums such as Lino-printing, combining analogue and digital formats to create GIF projections of ink prints and also deconstructing his prints through collage experimentation.
